Find Your Spirit Animal

  1. 1
    Clarify your intentions
. Finding your spiritual animal is a religious, spiritual and supernatural exercise. If you go into it with the wrong frame of mind, you will experience failure or negative consequences.

  2. 2
Ask yourself some questions as you start your quest. Here are some examples:

    • Which animals, birds or insects intrigue you?
    • What animal do you most want to see when you go into the forest, to a park or to the zoo.
    • What animal do you commonly see both in the city and out in nature?
    • Is there an animal that you feel a sudden strong interest in learning about?
    • Do you find a certain animal frightening?
    • Has a particular animal ever bitten or attacked you?
    • Do you have recurring dreams about a particular animal?
  3. 3
Make a list or draw some animals that have made an impression on you. Include animals not only from your time in nature but also from photos, stories, carvings, paintings or even movies.

  4. 4
Keep a journal of your meditations. Some animals may come and go, and some may stay. Keeping a journal of your interactions with these animals will help you learn more about yourself and your animal totem.

  5. 5
Look for reoccurring animals. If you start seeing an animal frequently, this could be your spiritual animal revealing itself to you. For example, if you see an elk on a nature program, drive past an elk lodge and then hear someone talk about going to Elk Grove, Wisconsin, all within the same day, this could be a sign that your spiritual animal is the elk.

  6. 6
Meditate to connect with your animal. Take some of the following steps:

    • Create a place that makes you feel comfortable. This setting could be a natural place like a meadow or a beach. It could also be somewhere man-made, such as a zoo or park. Trust your instincts.
    • Spend some time experiencing your surroundings. When you feel ready, begin to explore. Go anywhere that arouses your curiosity. Consider the idea that everything you find is something created by your mind to teach you something.
    • Close your eyes and call your animal. Ask your animal spirit to come into your meditative state so that you can talk to it. Spend time with your animal and learn how the 2 of you interact. Be open to anything it may have to offer and ask any questions that are on your mind.
    • If you find tools like candles, incense or smudges helpful while you're meditating, then feel free to use them. After a period of time meditating, ranging from several hours to several days, you will hear your spiritual animal and understand what it is.[1]
  7. 7
Perform a totem meditation. Consider the qualities that you want to bring out in yourself over the coming year. Meditate on an animal that you think would help you to reach your goals.[2]
    • Ask the animal for its assistance, wisdom and guidance, and write down any insights that you experience during the meditation.
    • Use the Internet, your local library or other research tools to find out more information on your animal and its context in different spiritual practices.
  8. 8
Consult a shaman. These spiritual mediums may have methods or advice for finding your spiritual animal. Be aware that finding a shaman in your neighborhood isn't as easy as doing a Google search or looking in the phone book. You may have to ask around or investigate on your own.

  9. 9
Honor your animal. It is believed in shamanism that you gain a deeper connection with your spiritual animal by honoring it. In doing this, you're letting it know that its assistance in helping you with your life is appreciated.
